Somewhere In Time

If you are a fan of the island then you at some point have either watched or heard about the movie filmed there in 1980 called Somewhere In Time. Little did I know when my mom shared this movie with me when I was little I would find out that it was on the place I love most. It stars Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer.

Here is is short summary of the film:

Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) is a playwright in the midst of a writing slump. After deciding to leave town to clear his head after a breakup and looming deadline he drive aimlessly to end up at the Grand Hotel. Here he comes across a photo of an actress Elise McKenna (Jane Seymour) through mind hypnosis he travels back in time to 1912 when she was starring in a play the the playhouse there. Watched by her overbearing manager (Christopher Plummer) Elise begins to fall in love with Richard. But will there love be able to stand the test of time -literally.

On the podcast I go into how I got to know this film as a child. The one thing that is so evident still on the island is the presence of this film. Whether it is with the “Is it You?” rock or the the gazebo made entirely for this movie (located up by Fort Mackinac) or even the portrait of Jane Seymour cast throughout the island. The film was not a box office smash but over time became a cult favorite. This includes and entire weekend located at the Grand Hotel dedicated to the film. Here are some the things you can do then. This year it is held October 29-31. Here is a link to tell you all about it. https://www.mackinacblog.com/?p=99

Jane Seymour at a Somewhere in Time weekend

The music in this film is another character in itself. Composed by John Barry -per request by his friend Jane Seymour- the 18th variation of Sergei Rachmanioff’s Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini. It is so important in a scene when they first meet. It give goosebumps. The moment is when Elise first sees Richard and asks “Is it You”.

Below is a map of where the different locations of the film are on the island. Most are at the Grand Hotel with the theatre at Mission Point. It is fun to see these in person. The Grand also has Richard’s hat is on display. It has been moved along with some other movie artifacts due to some remodeling so be sure to ask when you visit where the display is at.

If you have never watched the movie I highly recommend before going to the island. It just makes it that much more special. Also here is a fun link to other interesting trivia facts: https://www.funtrivia.com/en/Movies/Somewhere-in-Time-3009.html
